Falmouth Has Two Salt Seasons, Not One

Inland Maine gets one salt season. Falmouth gets two, and that is the whole reason a coating outperforms wax here.

The first runs November through April. MaineDOT spreads a five-year average of 125,000 tonnes of rock salt and just under a million gallons of salt brine across roughly 8,800 lane miles each season, according to its November 19, 2025, winter readiness release — and the brine goes down as an anti-icing treatment before the storm arrives. Liquid brine wets a vehicle and clings to it in a way granular salt never does. US Route 1 and I-295 through Falmouth get that treatment early and often.

The second season never ends. Nearly a fifth of Falmouth is water — 6.96 of its 36.34 square miles — and the town borders Casco Bay directly. Vehicles parked along Foreside Road, at the Town Landing, or anywhere near the water sit in salt-laden air in July as surely as in January. A wax that gets a car through an inland winter is simply not doing the same job in Falmouth Foreside in the middle of summer.
